Blog Tour: Appetite

Hello readers! It’s Saturday and time for a surprise blog tour post. I normally do blog tour posts at the start of the week so when I was given the opportunity to do one on a weekend, I jumped at the chance. This post is for the Adult Fiction novel Appetite by Anita Cassidy and published by Red Door Publishing!

Appetitelow res

Because everyone hungers for something…

Food and Sex: two appetites the modern world stimulates, but also the ones we are expected to keep under control. But what happens when we don’t?

Embarking on an affair, lonely wife and mother Naomi blossoms sexually in a false spring while David, the fattest boy at the local comprehensive and best friend of her son, struggles to overcome bullying and the apathy of his divorced mother.

David finally starts to learn about the mechanisms of appetite through a science project set by his intelligent but jaded teacher, Matthew. David’s brave efforts to change himself open Matthew’s eyes to his activist girlfriend’s dangerous plans to blow up VitSip, a local energy-drink company where Naomi works.

At the mercy of their appetites, this exciting debut novel shows that some hungers can never be satisfied…

REVIEW: Appetite was definitely a book out of my comfort zone. I don’t really read a lot of adult fiction and when I do, it does take a while for me to get settled since I mainly review YA. There are multiple POVs in the novel and are clearly separated out by the names of the main characters. David is a high school student, getting bullied because of his weight, Naomi works for an energy drink company and has a son who is friends with David and Matthew who is one of David’s teachers. Their paths cross at various points throughout.

Naomi’s journey is looking for a solid romance so spends most of the time chatting to guys and arranging dates. David deals with his parents relationship breakdown and then the desire to start eating more healthy foods and not end up like his mother who has arranged a gastric band. Matthew is struggling to keep the students engaged and motivated in their learning and is also dealing with a break-up. Appetite contains topics such as Food, Sex, Peer Pressure and the choice between Right or Wrong. For readers over the age of eighteen looking for a book that tackles everyday issues and the power of thinking, this is for you.

Thanks to the team at Red Door Publishing and the author Anita for letting me be a part of this promotional blog tour. I will leave a banner which lists all of the other bloggers that are participating as well so stop on by and read their posts! Have a great day! Alice x

Blog Tour: A Mighty Dawn

Welcome to my blog for today’s post! I’m super excited to be participating in the promotional blog tour for Adult Historical Fantasy novel A Mighty Dawn by Theodore Brun. Keep reading for more information about the book as well as a full spoiler-free review containing my thoughts!

A gripping and brilliantly realized debut epic adventure set in eighth-century Denmark. This is the beginning of an ambitious new series in the vein of George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones.

Hakan, son of Haldan, chosen son of the Lord of the Northern Jutes, swears loyalty to his father in fire, in iron, and in blood. But there are always shadows that roam. When a terrible tragedy befalls Hakan’s household he is forced to leave his world behind. He must seek to pledge his sword to a new king. Nameless and alone, he embarks on a journey to escape the bonds of his past and fulfil his destiny as a great warrior.

Whispers of sinister forces in the north pull Hakan onwards to a kingdom plagued by mysterious and gruesome deaths. But does he have the strength to do battle with such dark foes? Or is death the only sane thing to seek in this world of blood and broken oaths?

REVIEW: A Mighty Dawn is one of those books that really transports you on a journey across mysterious lands where anyone and anything can pounce on you. Haken is loyal to his father until a tragedy that occurs in his home settlement and hidden secrets come to light. Soon, he renounces himself, changes his name to Erlan (meaning stranger) and begins a dangerous journey to find another King to form an alliance with. During the travelling, he meets a young boy Kai who becomes his companion. With talk of dark enemies who are around and out for blood, fighting back is critical until the abduction of a royal princess opens up new obstacles to face.

I don’t tend to read many historical fantasies but this one certainly didn’t hold back from the action. Hakan as a character was brutal, powerful but yet ended up with various injuries throughout the novel. I enjoyed the journey that Hakan and Kai took to rescue the princess, with twists and turns in each chapter, I was genuinely excited to see what happened next. This debut novel made me as a reader experience the fictional world (inspired by Norse Mythology and Scandinavia) being bought to life. I am descended from Vikings so I was interested to see Scandinavian roots amongst  the main characters. Adult readers who like tales of finding a new identity and kingdoms of secrets with strong characters, this is the book for you!

Blog Tour: You Won’t Know I’m Gone

Hello readers! Welcome to my blog for today’s post, a blog tour stop for the YA Thriller You Won’t Know I’m Gone by Kristen Orlando, the second book in The Black Angel Chronicles series. Here, this will contain a full review as well as more information about the book including purchase links. Enjoy reading!

You Won’t Know I’m Gone

(The Black Angel Chronicles #2)
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: January 16th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, Thriller, Young Adult

Reagan has to prove herself to an elite group of special agents—and avenge her mother’s death—in the second book in the Black Angel Chronicles from the author of You Don’t Know My Name.

Going rogue in an effort to rescue her kidnapped parents has cost Reagan Hillis her automatic ticket to the Training Academy. But becoming a Black Angel is the only way Reagan will be able to exact revenge on her mother’s merciless killer, Santino Torres.

When Reagan is given a chance to prove that she’s worthy of training to be a Black Angel, she also gets the first chance she’s ever had to be her true self. No aliases. No disguises.

But when her friend Luke joins her at the Black Angels training compound, Reagan finds herself once again torn between the person she was and the person she wants to be. Reagan has to prove that she’s as good as her parents trained her to be, because she’ll never find Torres without the Black Angels’ help.

Writing is one of the great loves of Kristen Orlando’s life and she has been lucky enough to make it her living, first as a television producer, then as a marketer and now as a novelist. Kristen graduated with a B.A. in English literature from Kenyon College. She lives in Columbus, Ohio with the other great love of her life, Michael. You Don’t Know My Name is her debut novel.

REVIEW: Reagan Hillis is looking for revenge after her mother is killed. After being given a chance to prove her skills in training to become a member of the Black Angel at their training academy, every move she makes will prove vital to achieving her goal of finding and ending the life of a ruthless killer. When her friend and guy she kissed Luke shows up at the training academy, the story follows their interactions across missions and surviving classes in combat and survival skills. That ending! Ahhhhhh, this was an adventure, thrilling and exciting read. Reagan was not just fighting with her mind but also torn between following the rules and doing what she feels is right. The events in this book do follow on from the ending of book one (You Don’t Know My Name) but it was easy to read and follow the storyline without having to refer back to the first book. I liked Reagan as a character as well as the missions that she and the rest of the trainees at the training academy participated in. Luke as a character did frustrate me at times, however, the fast-paced ride definitely kept me excited to read on to the very end!

Blog Tour: Hinder

Hello readers! Welcome back to my blog for today’s post which is the tour stop for Hinder, a New-Adult Paranormal novel by Kristin Ping! Contained throughout will be more details about the book as well as my own review and a international giveaway running. Ready? Let’s get started!

Book details:
by Kristin Ping
(Guardian of Monsters #1)
Publication date: May 15th 2018
Genres: Fantasy, New Adult, Paranormal

Ethan Sutcliff seems like a normal seventeen-year-old—at least that’s what he’s trying to portray. In a secret society run by the Supernaturals, Ethan is what witches call a Bender. Benders are Witches’ Guardians, who are able to control a witches’ ability, bend it, or move it away from harming humans. In Ethan’s case, he is able to bend the Earth element. But at the age of fifteen, he lost all connection to it, and the reasons behind it could only mean one of two things: His Wielder is either dead, or hiding out somewhere.

Alex Burgendorf has been living in her aunt’s locket for the past sixteen years with her mother—a Fire Wielder, and her father—a Water Wielder. For sixteen years, her parents vowed to protect her, and they have, as she is the last Earth wielding witch. However, time is running out. Alex must find her Bender, or the fate of the Supernaturals might be at stake.

Kristin resides in South Africa with her husband, two beautiful girls and two bulldogs that tries to eat her house.
She has been writing for the past eight years and her first debut novel, Hinder: A Bender’s novel will be published 2018 by Fire Quill Publishing.

When she isn’t writing, she is spending her time with her family, or trying to teach her two bulldogs to not eat her house. You can find more about Kristin at

REVIEW: I was super excited when I learnt that I had been selected to be a part of the Hinder tour. This 2018 release is one that you definitely need to keep an eye out for! Ethan is a bender which his Mum died trying to protect him. He uses the Earth element and has the skill to bend it and be in control of witches. The other main character Alex is trapped in her Aunt’s locket and she needs to find her bender before everything crashes around her. When Ethan and Alex’s worlds both collide, they have to stay alive before evil creeps up behind them and swallows them away in a puff of black smoke. I don’t read a lot of New-Adult but when I do, I thoroughly enjoy it. Hinder was visual, action-packed and also portrayed the joys and strains of relationships very well. As this is the first book in a series, I did like how the ending wasn’t a cliffhanger but at the same time, did leave some mystery behind which hopefully is solved in book 2? I would say what but that’s spoilers 😉
GIVEAWAY!: As part of the blog tour, there is a giveaway going on to win a $75 Amazon gift card and… it’s INTERNATIONAL entries! To be in with a chance to win, click on this link:  Entries close on January 7th 2018!
That concludes this post! A big thank you to the team at Xpresso Blog Tours and Kristin for the opportunity to be a part of the tour. Don’t forget to stop by all of the other blogs that are currently participating in this too.

REVIEW: Having read and loved The Butterfly Code last year, getting the email to confirm my place on the tour for its sequel made me feel extremely excited! The storyline continues as we follow Aeris Thorne, a genetically modified human as she receives an interview letter for a company with the opportunity to write music scores for film and TV. However on arrival, she falls into an evil trap and ends up rescuing a girl named Nessa, the daughter of the man who kidnapped Aeris’ best friend. Suddenly, both of them must hide from the enemies as well as the tribunal involving Hunter to contend with. One wrong move could change everything. The story was fast-paced, with action happening in every chapter. The last scene made me physically gasp with horror at the circumstances surrounding Nessa and Aeris. It was another strong book in the series and also reminded me of the main events from The Butterfly Code since it was a long time go that I originally read the first book. If you are looking for something quick and thrilling, stop by the Girl on Fire series! I confess, its very difficult not to give spoilers away but one scene which Aeris and her Dad catch-up after a long and she revealing a memory from her past was emotional and heartwarming. The third and final book The Modified Girl was released a few weeks ago which I hope to read over the festive break!
As part of The Infinity Gene blog tour, there is a prize up for grabs consisting of a $25 Amazon giftcard, perfect for shopping in the upcoming sales or as a present to a loved one. To enter, click this link: The closing date for entries is November 30th 2017!

Blog Tour: Spell Book and Scandal

IMG_1155Hello readers! Welcome to the blog tour post for Spell Book and Scandal, a YA Paranormal story. This post will contain all of the information about the book, where to purchase a copy and a very exciting giveaway opportunity, so let’s get onto the fun!

Book details:

Spell Book & Scandal
by Jen McConnel
Publication date: October 31st 2017
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Synopsis: Shelby King is tired of living in her sister’s shadow. Just because Christina is the most powerful caster in school doesn’t mean Shelby’s any good at magic; she’s a scribe, like her mom, and everyone expects her to write spells for her sister, the way her mom always has for her dad. But Shelby’s spells fail spectacularly, and by the time she’s a sophomore, Christina won’t touch them with a ten-foot-pole; their parents aren’t much better. Shelby is fed up, and she decides to show the world she doesn’t care if she isn’t as good as her stuck-up sister, or as talented as their powerful parents. In fact, she decides it’s time to break all the rules, magical and otherwise, and she starts sneaking out to meet Jeremiah Smallwood, the second-best caster in school at illegal pop-up spell battles around town. She may not be able to scribe for him, but she doesn’t mind letting him think that she could; Shelby’s been half in love with Miah as long as she can remember, but he’s never paid attention to her until now, and she’s not going to risk her chances worrying about a pesky thing like the truth. But when Christina rats her out to their parents, Shelby can’t control her anger, and words come pouring out of her that she can’t take back even if she wanted to, threatening Christina’s future…and Shelby’s own chances with Jeremiah. It’ll take more magic than Shelby’s ever dreamed of to set things right, but no scribe has that much magic…right?

Review: Spells, sisterhood, a touch of romance, Spell Book and Scandal is basically Freaky Friday meets Hocus Pocus. Shelby and Christina are siblings that just can’t  seem to get along, while Christina is practicing for an exam called The Threes, Shelby is trying to write her own spells but keeping her writing a secret. Because her parents are more supportive to her older sister, Shelby decides that the only way to fit in is to break all the rules. However in the process, she accidentally writes a spell causing her and Christina to switch bodies! Trying to navigate their way through school life and practising for exams, Shelby must come up with the correct spell to switch both of them back before it’s too late. The story was an easy read with a quick start, the first in a series with the next release in 2018, the ending wasn’t a cliffhanger which I was pleased about. I enjoyed reading about the illegal pop-up spell battles that took place in a zoo as well as the developing relationship between Shelby and Jeremiah. The length of the story is perfect if you are looking for a quick, fun read. I look forward to reading the next book and witness more spells being cast!

Now onto the exciting giveaway which everyone can participate in! The giveaway is to name a character that will be featured in book 2 of the series! This closes on November 23rd 2017 for entries and you can enter here:

That wraps up the blog tour post! A big thank you to Jen and the team at Xpresso for letting me be a part of the tour, see you all soon with some more uploads.

Book details:

My New Crush Gave to Me
by Shani Petroff
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: October 31st 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

This sweet, funny holiday romance from the author of Romeo And What’s Her Name features cute boys, plenty of rom-com mishaps, and a determined heroine readers are certain to fall for.

Charlotte “Charlie” Donovan knows exactly what she wants for Christmas: Teo Ortiz. He’s a star athlete, a National Honor Society member, and the most popular guy in school. Plus he contributes to the school paper, where Charlie is a co-editor. Basically, he’s exactly the type of guy Charlie’s looking for. The only problem is—he barely knows she exists.

But Charlie has a plan: rig the paper’s Secret Santa and win his heart with the perfect gift. The catch? She has no idea what to get him. Enter J.D. Ortiz–Teo’s cousin, and possibly the most annoying person on the planet. He’s easy going, laid back, disorganized, and spontaneous—the exact opposite
of Charlie (and Teo). But he knows what Teo wants, so she’s stuck with him.

Yet, the more time Charlie spends with J.D., the more she starts to wonder: Does she really know what, or rather who, she wants for Christmas?

Shani Petroff’s newest young adult comedy of errors, My New Crush Gave to Me, is the perfect read for those searching for some love and laughter along with their holiday spirit.

REVIEW: I read My New Crush Gave To Me on Halloween which did feel a little strange considering the novel is set during Christmas time but honestly, reading this story was simply a pure and festive delight. The main character Charlie aka Charlotte plots to get the one person she wants to fall in love with and have a happy Christmas while creating fun memories to cherish. A plan to use Secret Santa to accomplish that goal opens up more questions than answers as Charlie realises that maybe her crush’s cousin actually might be Mr Right. This standalone was a laugh out loud, heartwarming rom-com, perfect for snuggling up in bed and reading with some hot chocolate or in my case, a mug of hot fruit tea. My New Crush Gave To Me is perfect for teen readers who have been in love or are in love. I recommend this as a 15+ read due to an underage drinking scene. I liked Charlie and J.D as characters, as the plotline developed, myself as the reader really got to see their struggles and a hilarious trip to the shopping mall which also pushes their friendship to the limits. Fun, festive and fabulous. I’m thrilled Swoon Reads published this, I’ve really been struggling to find a good YA Christmas story to read and happy to say that My New Crush Gave To Me is one of my favourites!

OK readers, it’s giveaway time! Just a disclaimer, the blog tour giveaway is only open to residents residing in either the US or Canada!
